Samira Buhari at UNGA80 as Daurama Foundation Intensifies Women’s Economic Empowerment Efforts

Daurama Foundation is delighted to announce that its founder, Dr Samira Buhari, was represented by Buhari Salisu Buhari and Dr. Souwelimatou Amadou Amani at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) Side Event held on 20
September 2025 at the Millennium Hilton Hotel, New York.

The event, organised by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, carried the theme Scaling Women’s Economic Empowerment: Financing Inclusive Growth for Peace, Development and Human Rights – Lessons from the Nigeria for Women Programme. The gathering marked thirty years since the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a milestone that underscores the global urgency of financing gender equality to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

In her keynote remarks, the Honourable Minister of Women Affairs, Dr (Mrs) Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, stated:

  • “Economic empowerment for women is not an act of charity. It is a sound investment in Nigeria’s future. We must design financing models that reach the rural woman, the market woman and the young graduate alike. When we remove barriers for women, we accelerate our nation’s development and honour the commitments made in Beijing thirty years ago.”

Her words set the tone for a session focused on practical financing solutions and inclusive economic growth.

Daurama Foundation highlighted the achievements of the Samira Buhari Mentorship Programme (SBMP), which has just graduated its 2025 cohort of dynamic young women drawn from communities across Nigeria.

These graduates have completed intensive training in digital skills, leadership, communication and entrepreneurship, emerging as leaders who are already launching small businesses, engaging in civic service and mentoring other young women

The programme advances SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) while fostering a new generation of role models.

  • “I am proud of our 2025 mentees whose dedication proves that targeted investment in women yields lasting transformation. Their success strengthens families, communities and our entire nation,”

said Dr Samira Buhari, Founder of Daurama Foundation.

Daurama Foundation appreciates the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs for convening the side event and acknowledges the Nigeria for Women Programme (NFWP) for providing valuable lessons on scaling inclusive financing models.

The Foundation also recognises the contributions of civil society groups, development partners and private sector supporters who continue to expand opportunities for women and girls.

Daurama Foundation invites governments, donors, investors and corporate partners to join in expanding mentorship networks, blended financing and digital infrastructure so that every woman and girl can access the skills and resources needed to thrive.
